COSON-ST: for hands-free CPT's
The COSON-ST sets a new standard for fully automated and hands-free Cone Penetration Tests (CPTs) on land. Combining the proven COSON penetrometer with the patented SingleTwist™ technology has resulted in a CPT pusher that eliminates the need for manual operation. The operator only needs to give a start or stop command; the system controls the pushing, rolling out, retracting and rolling up of the CPT string completely independently. This transforms the CPT operater’s workplace from a physical working environment to a comfortable office location.
From manual to CPT robot
The core of the system is the double-acting hydraulic pushing system. Instead of a single clamp, the COSON-ST uses two clamps that automatically alternate. This creates a continuous push/pull movement without interruptions. This results in shorter cycle times, constant pressure forces, and the prevention of dissipation effects.
ST-rods: the roll-up CPT string
Unique to the COSON-ST are the roll-up ST-rods based on the patented SingleTwist™ technology. These rods have two positions: relaxed (flexible and roll-up) and twisted (rigid and suitable for pushing). Thanks to the smart bayonet thread mechanism, the rods are fully locked with just one turn.
The COSON-ST works with three smart components:

Folder: For smooth unrolling and rolling up of the ST-rods.

Sprocket:Ensures correct positioning and progress.

Twister: Automatically locks the rods with a single turn.
This creates a fully automatic cycle in which the tightening of the rods is done hands-free. This not only increases safety and efficiency, but also reduces physical strain on the operator.
Real-time data acquisition
Like all CPT systems of A.P. van den Berg, the COSON-ST is fully compatible with the Icone data acquisition system. This includes the Icontrol, Icones (5, 10, and 15 cm²), Ifield software for real-time data visualization and click-on modules for additional measurements such as Seismic, Vane, Conductivity, and Magneto.
