WISON-APB-Classic
The WISON-APB-Classic is a proven wireline Cone Penetration Test (CPT) system developed for offshore geotechnical soil investigations. It is capable of performing CPTs and collecting soil samples at water depths of up to 550 meters. Since its introduction in the 1980s, the WISON-APB has established itself as an industry standard for offshore CPT operations and has been deployed on numerous major projects worldwide. Its robust design, extensive range of tooling options, and reliable digital CPT data acquisition make it a dependable and efficient solution for offshore soil investigation.
The standard in offshore CPT technology for over 40 years
The WISON-APB-Classic is capable of performing Cone Penetration Tests (CPTs) and collecting soil samples to depths up to 550 m (water depth and drilling depth). The system requires a drill string with an inner diameter of at least 4โ (101,6 mm) and a drill tower clearance of 11 m.ย The pushing tool is available in three configurations, allowing flexibility to suit different project requirements. The WISON-APB-Classic is equipped with a self-tensioning winch, enabling smooth and controlled movement at a maximum speed of 2 mย per sec inside the drill string.

How does the WISON-APB work?
The core of the WISON-APB system is a hydraulic cylinder to which the cone is attached. The system is operated from the deck of a geotechnical drilling vessel via an umbilical cable, which supplies hydraulic power and electrical power while enabling data communication between the deck and the downhole tool.
The WISON-APB-Classic is equipped with an electric self-tensioning winch that provides heave compensation, ensuring accurate and reliable measurements even when the vessel is subject to motion and wave-induced movement.
Full integration with digital Icone software
The WISON-APB-Classic is fully integrated with A.P. van den Bergโs Icone data acquisitionsystem. The system comprises Icontrol and Icones and can be expanded with click-on modules such as Conductivity, Magneto, Seismic, and Vane, providing flexible configuration for a wide range of offshore geotechnical applications.
Soil sampling
The WISON-APB-Classic supports two soil sampling methods:
Push Sampler
The sample tube is pressed directly into the soil.
Piston Sampler
The sample tube is guided by a piston to minimize sample disturbance. The Piston Sampler is particularly suited for soft or layered soils and provides high-quality, low-disturbance samples.
Multipurpose BHA
For maximum operational flexibility, a dedicated multipurpose Bottom Hole Assembly (BHA) is available, allowing the WISON-APB-Classic to be combined with a wide range of tools and systems. The BHA is compatible with, among others:
-
PQ3 core barrels
-
S-Geobor systems from Atlas Copco
